Support Arbor Hospice
The Development Department at Arbor Hospice provides philanthropic support to advance the mission of Arbor Hospice in meeting the growing end-of-life care needs of the communities it serves. Through the generosity of individual donors, corporate partners and foundation support, Arbor Hospice Development strives to meet the ongoing needs of patients and their families
Pediatric Hospice Care
Pediatric hospice care is more costly to provide than adult hospice care due to the higher cost of medications, specialized pediatric equipment and supplies, and advanced clinical and grief support. These necessary expenditures create a gap between reimbursement for services and the actual cost to provide care. Arbor Hospice is committed to providing excellent care to this vulnerable population, and support to their families, by supplementing reimbursements with donated resources to ensure that these children and their families receive the care they need, at the time they need it and for as long as it is needed.
Grief Support Services
Families receive anticipatory grief support prior to the death of their loved one and continue to receive grief support services for 13 months following their loved one's death. As a certified Medicare hospice provider, Arbor Hospice is required to provide these services, however, we do not receive additional reimbursement for these services from Medicare or private insurance companies following the patient's death. These services are an important part of the Arbor Hospice mission and the healing process for family and friends of those who have made the end-of-life journey. Arbor Hospice also provides these services to the community at no charge regardless of whether hospice services were received from Arbor Hospice.
The cost to deliver care to a hospice patient in either The Residence of Arbor Hospice or their own home is often more expensive than the reimbursement provided by Medicare, Medicaid or private insurance. This creates a barrier to service for some patients and families who need a higher level of care, or are unable to remain at home.
Arbor Hospice Development helps cover the "gap" between the actual cost to provide residential care as compared to the reimbursement rate.
The financial gap widens further for patients who are uninsured, causing an additional hurdle to getting the assistance they need, whether they remain in their own home or at The Residence of Arbor Hospice. The need to offset these uncompensated expenses continues to expand as the number of uninsured families in Michigan grows.
Each year Arbor Hospice provides end-of-life care to more than 1,900 patients and 3,800 members of their families regardless of an individual's ability to pay. In addition, we provide ongoing grief support services to more than 5,400 adults, teens and children who live in our communities. Arbor Hospice has provided patient-centered family and community care for more than 30 years.
How can you help?
Each year, Arbor Hospice Development raises over $1 million dollars in support of Arbor Hospice programs. These funds are raised through fundraising activities and philanthropic support from corporations, foundations and the community. This generous support helps Arbor Hospice provide the care and services to patients and their families when they need it most.
A special thanks to United Way, who help make our services possible.
