Arbor Hospice & Palliative Care Announces Volunteer Training Sessions in Ann Arbor
Posted: March 3, 2016
Arbor Hospice & Palliative Care is hosting a new round of training for volunteers who are interested in bringing comfort and companionship to patients facing life-limiting illnesses, and their families. Volunteers choose locations they are most comfortable visiting within Arbor Hospice’s service area – often times it’s locations close to their own home or work. The four training sessions will be held at Arbor’s office located at 2366 Oak Valley Drive in Ann Arbor.
The comprehensive training sessions are will be held every Monday and Wednesday from March 14 through March 23. All classes will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Arbor volunteers are unique and compassionate individuals willing to help someone in a time of need. In keeping with health care industry guidelines, Arbor provides thorough training to ensure volunteers are fully prepared to assist patients, as well as provide a brief respite to caregivers.
“Arbor Hospice & Palliative Care relies on the support of caring and compassionate individuals to help ensure our patients and their families receive the utmost level of care,” said Gloria D. Brooks, President of Arbor Hospice. “Arbor volunteers are an essential part of our team.”
Over the course of the training sessions, volunteers will cover the differences between hospice and palliative care, communication, active listening, cultural difference, spirituality, and grief.
This will include highlighting and learning the benefits of hospice care, the history of Arbor Hospice, how to build a connection, how to effectively communicate with patients and families, and how to make the patient as comfortable as possible when making their transition.
Volunteers will also be trained on how to find closure themselves when saying goodbye to a patient. Reporting and documentation requirements, as well as varying guidelines for visiting patients in long term care facilities and in their homes are also explained.
