Questions to Ask
Potential Hospice Care Providers
- What services
does your hospice program provide?
- Is your
program certified by Medicare and licensed by the state? What other
certifications do you hold?
- Do the
members of the hospice team live in my community? Is it easy for them
to get to my home?
- How often
will my nurse visit? Will it be the same nurse each time? Who takes
calls after hours and how are they handled?
- How many
hours will the home health aide spend with me each week?
- How does
your hospice manage pain?
- What facilities
does the hospice use for inpatient care? For respite care?
- Will volunteers
be available to help me or my family members?
- How many
hours of support can I expect?
- Do you
provide special services for children?
- If I am
unhappy with any aspect of the program, what will be done to address
the problem?
- How are
families involved in the patient’s care?
- What other
staff members are available to me? Chaplains? Speech and occupational
therapists? Children's Therapists?
- What insurance
do you accept? Who handles the paperwork for the insurance billing?
- What happens
if I am not covered by insurance or my family is unable to pay for services?
- What does
the hospice admission process include? What can I expect?
- If I choose
your hospice program, how soon can services be started?
- What kind
of support do you provide to the family after the patient dies?
In addition
to calling hospices in your area, you may want to talk to your physician,
hospital discharge planners, or social workers to help you determine which
hospice best fits your needs.
