When Should I Think About Hospice Care?

Ideally, conversations about end-of-life care will begin long before there is a need. We realize this discussion may be difficult to talk about therefore the present is the best time for family members to share their wishes, long before it becomes a concern. Having these conversations before the time for hospice is needed can greatly reduce stress. Having discussions in advance helps the patient feel that they are in control and the family is unified in their decision. These conversations help the patients and their family make an educated decision that includes the advice and input of everyone.

Overwhelmingly, families who enter hospice care say that in retrospect, they wish they had requested hospice sooner because the experience was one of the most meaningful times in their lives.
