Many opportunities exist for you to help patients and families as an Arbor Hospice volunteer, including:
Patient companionship. Be a companion or social partner to patients or family caregivers. This role includes assisting with hobbies, such as playing cards or board games, listening to music and watching favorite movies together.
Caregiver relief. Provide family caregivers a much-needed break so they can run errands, attend important events, or just refresh and recharge.
By Your Side. This special role is to be a supportive presence at the bedside of a patient who is actively dying so they are not alone.
Pet visits. Visit patients with our therapy dogs, Alpine or Leon, or bring your own friendly pet (certified therapy animals preferred). Patients living in their own homes may also need help with dog walking or pet care.
My Stories. Assist patients in reviewing their lives and telling their stories through video or audio recording.
Hospitality hosts at The Residence of Arbor Hospice. Greet visitors at the hospitality desk of The Residence in Saline, provide tours and answer questions. Volunteers also visit with patients to provide companionship, deliver flowers to patient rooms, and serve tea and cookies to patients and visiting family members.
Running errands. Help patients and families by doing their grocery shopping and running other household errands for them.
Light meal preparation. Prepare a simple meal for a patient and assist them with mealtime activities.
Light housekeeping and home maintenance. Assist patients and families with folding laundry, doing dishes, tidying the patient’s room and other light tasks. Volunteers may also help with chores, like taking out the trash, sweeping the porch or changing light bulbs.
Lawn care assistance and garden maintenance. Help patients with caring for their lawns and gardens, including mowing, weeding, watering, and re-potting house plants.
Administrative support. Volunteers also assist at Arbor Hospice’s offices by making copies, assembling packets and mailings, making phone calls, doing data entry, filing and fundraising activities.
Grief support. Assist with grief support groups, meal time groups at local restaurants, walking groups and general office support for Arbor Grief Care’s programs.
