Nonprofit gifted $3,500 to improve services for children coping with grief
Ann Arbor, MI, September 9, 2019 — The Kiwanis Club of Ann Arbor, has awarded Arbor Hospice a $3,500 grant that will expand the support it provides through its Camp Good Grief program.
Arbor Hospice was one of 69 businesses and service agencies in the Ann Arbor community to receive a grant.
Camp Good Grief is a free, one-day day camp for children ages 8-17 who have lost a loved one. Facilitated by Arbor Hospice grief support managers, trained volunteers and experienced camp staff, Camp Good Grief provides fun and adventurous activities that are combined with education and emotional support. Every child in the Ann Arbor community is eligible to attend camp, whether or not their loved one received care from Arbor Hospice.
Camp Good Grief is completely funded through philanthropic support from individuals and organizations. Medical insurance, Medicare nor Medicaid reimburse program expenses. Financial support from community groups, such as the Kiwanis Club, is vital to the program’s success and growth in meeting an ever-increasing community need.
According to the U.S. Bureau of the Census, five to 15 percent of children experience the death of a parent, sibling, grandparent or other significant other before the age of 18. Through its year-round grief support services, Arbor helps children deal with their grief journey by providing them with knowledge, tools and a reliable support system.
Arbor Hospice is grateful for this generous grant from the Kiwanis Club of Ann Arbor. The grant program is based solely on the club’s successful weekly Thrift Sales, and this award will ensure Camp Good Grief, along with Arbor Hospice’s other grief support programs for children, continues to thrive.

The Kiwanis Club of Ann Arbor was organized on May 13, 1921, and was chartered on June 13, 1921, with 60 charter members. As of December 8, 2011, the club had 176 members, making it the largest Kiwanis club in Michigan. Since its founding, the club has inducted 1,187 members.
